Back in 2018, I interviewed West Coast producer Fredwreck on Conversations With Chad, and during our conversation, he revealed an idea he had for a supergroup featuring himself, DJ Quik, and DJ Battlecat.
He even had a name for it: ATOMIC DOGS!
Fredwreck envisioned a five-song EP built around original funk-inspired production, with all three producers using talk boxes to create three-part harmonies. He also floated the possibility of taking the concept onstage for live performances.
Think about that lineup for a minute. Three producers who helped shape the sound of West Coast hip-hop, coming together for a project inspired by the funk traditions of Roger Troutman, Zapp, and Parliament-Funkadelic.
Quik, Battlecat, and Fredwreck each have their own distinct sound, but all three share a deep appreciation for funk and live musicianship. Hearing them trade talk-box melodies and harmonies would’ve been something special.
The project was an idea Fredwreck discussed during our 2018 interview, not a confirmed release, and it’s one of those concepts that makes you wonder what could’ve been.
