Slick Rick Teams With Idris Elba, Nas & Giggs for Global Visual Album ‘Victory’

After more than two decades away from the album format, hip-hop icon Slick Rick is set to return with Victory, a genre-blurring visual album created in collaboration with acclaimed actor, producer, and musician Idris Elba. Set to drop June 13 through Idris Elba’s 7Wallace label in partnership with Mass Appeal, the project marks a pivotal moment in global hip-hop—fusing sound, film, and cultural legacy into a unified experience.

The release comes 26 years after The Art of Storytelling, Rick’s 1999 studio album, and unites two distinct artistic worlds — the gilded narratives of hip-hop’s golden age and the expansive vision of contemporary multimedia storytelling. Victory is executive produced by Rick (credited as The Poet) and Elba (credited as The Visionary), and includes collaborations with Nas, British rapper Giggs, and singer Estelle.

Victory is accompanied by a 30-minute film directed by Meji Alabi, known for his work on Beyoncé’s Black Is King. The film, shot across the U.S., UK, and Africa, is positioned as a cultural tapestry — fusing ancestral homage, modern visual artistry, and Rick’s signature charisma. Visual direction also includes photography by Jonathan Mannion, creative support from Equator Studios, and branding from British firm PAQ, along with Rick’s in-house creative team, Team Eye Patch. Audio mixing is handled by Grammy-winning engineer Young Guru.

Rick, born in London to Jamaican parents and raised in the Bronx, sees Victory as both a homecoming and a global statement. “It’s a sonic journey that reflects where I’ve been and where I’m going,” he said in a statement. “A visual blend of art and heart.”

Elba described the project as a “gift” to both UK and global audiences, while Nas, a longtime collaborator, called working with Rick again “great,” citing the rapper’s long-standing cultural influence.

Victory will receive its world premiere on June 7 at SXSW London at Shoreditch Town Hall, followed by a live conversation with Rick, Elba, and Alabi. The U.S. premiere is set for June 13 at the Tribeca Festival in New York, where Rick will appear for a post-screening Q&A.

Spanning four years of development and written between London and France, Victory draws on Slick Rick’s transatlantic roots and his lifelong role as a cultural bridge between the Caribbean diaspora, British youth, and the evolution of American hip-hop. Its arrival signals not just a long-awaited return, but a broadening of artistic boundaries — part celebration, part cultural chronicle, and wholly in Rick’s singular voice.
