Will Smith Returns To Music With ‘Based On A True Story’, His First Album In Two Decades

Two decades after Lost and Found, Will Smith has returned to music with Based on a True Story, a deeply personal album that reflects on the highs and lows of a life spent in the public eye. At 56, the Oscar-winning actor and hip-hop veteran no longer raps about teenage antics and summertime escapades. Instead, this new project delves into the complexities of fame, resilience, and personal evolution.

Smith set the stage for the album with several singles, including “Beautiful Scars” featuring Big Sean, “First Love”, “You Can Make It”, “Tantrum”, and “Work of Art.” The album also marks a reunion with longtime collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff, bringing their decades-long musical partnership full circle. Additional guest appearances include Teyana Taylor, Joyner Lucas, and Smith’s son, Jaden, adding both generational depth and contemporary energy to the project.

This release arrives under indie label Slang Records, with which Smith signed a distribution deal last year. It also lands almost exactly 20 years after Lost and Found, an album that saw him pushing back against industry skeptics while reaffirming his place in hip-hop. Smith’s latest effort continues that thread, but with a new sense of introspection shaped by decades of public scrutiny, personal reinvention, and artistic exploration.

For an artist whose career has spanned nearly 40 years—from pioneering radio-friendly rap in the late ’80s to becoming a Hollywood powerhouse—Based on a True Story is more than just a return to music. It’s a reflection of experience, growth, and a man who, despite all the transformations, still has something to say.
