This past Monday night (January 24), Talib Kweli took the Blue Note New York stage, backed by a live band, to celebrate hip-hop, soul, sampling, and rhymes. The bill on this historic night for hip-hop also featured jazz legend Bob James and hip-hop pioneer great Slick Rick.
Bob James, sporting a Wu-Tang Clan hoodie and Slick Rick’s giant gold rope chain, flowed through his jazz classics like “Nautilus,” which remains one of the most sampled songs in hip-hop. Fans witnessed a rare treat seeing Slick Rick rap his iconic single “Children’s Story,” which samples “Nautilus,” alongside Bob James and Talib Kweli.
Iconic producer DJ Premier was among those spotted in the audience.
