Pioneering producer DJ Pooh is undeniably a pillar in hip-hop. Four decades in, he has produced classic songs for LL Cool J, King Tee, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Ice Cube, Tha Dogg Pound and others. Coming up as a DJ for the legendary West Coast DJ crew of Uncle Jamm’s Army, Pooh’s historical production on LL Cool J’s 1987 release Bigger & Deffer, would cement him as true pioneer.
After producing incredible amounts of classic records for LL Cool J (“.357 – Break It Down”), King Tee (“Act A Fool”, “Played Like A Piano”), Del tha Funkee Homosapien (“Mistadobalina”), Ice Cube (“It Was A Good Day”), and producing two cuts off the Boyz n the Hood soundtrack: Yo-Yo‘s “”Mama Don’t Take No Mess” and Kam‘s “Every Single Weekend”, DJ Pooh began transitioning into film.
From producing the drive-by shooting sequence in Boyz n the Hood, Pooh would go on to co-write the film Friday with Ice Cube, and also portray the character iconic character “Red“. Other films in DJ Pooh’s filmography include 3 Strikes with Brian Hooks, The Wash with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, and Grow House with Faizon Love.
